Radio Milwaukee: #noemptybackpacks

Location: Radio Milwaukee Studio

How many of you remember at the end of summer getting ready to go into a store and find your school supply list? Back in the day, there were lists for all different schools, in the area where the supplies were to purchase new things for a year. Maybe (if you were really lucky) you would even walk home with a new lunch box...or the latest backpack too! A typical school supplies list for a kid might consist of a few of these basic items:

  • Backpack
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Folders
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • And more!

However, not everyone in the city I'm in closest proximity to... can afford these 'basic' things. Without hesitation, I knew I wanted to get involved in using my photography talents to create awareness of a wonderful opportunity I heard of via Radio Milwaukee.

Last week Thursday, I headed down to the 88.9 Radio Milwaukee studio for their 414 LIVE event. One of the best aspects of the event was actually a drive for Milwaukee Public School (MPS) students! What's more? This second annual #noemptybackpacks campaign (donating school supplies to Milwaukee Public School students) with Radio Milwaukee, came to life, as people joined for 414 LIVE. Many colorful school supplies, filled bins around the studio. The campaign aims to bring in a lot for Milwaukee students to look forward to (come the start of the new school year).

Outside of the station, people were greeted with the friendly Flowers for Dreams faces in the increasingly popular, Flowers for Dreams Flower Truck. [Side note: In the month of August, all Wisconsin purchases from Flowers for Dreams-- donate a backpack to a kid in need. This means that to be apart of the campaign, all you need to do is make a purchase!]

All the people contributing donations to the #noemptybackpacks campaign, at the studio, received a free mini bouquet from Flowers for Dreams, too! It was incredible to watch the bins fill in just a matter of a few hours (over wonderful live music).

To no surprise, by the end of the event, the bins started to overflow. (Cheers to this great Milwaukee community!) It's so amazing to see a variety of organizations, and people come together to celebrate: music, art and the future of Milwaukee!
